PROJECT OVERVIEW

OpenSports is a mobile app that helps organizers run recreational sports sessions — coordinating check-in, court assignments, live scoring, and format changes in real time, across sports such as pickleball and soccer. During a live session, organizers manage check-in, teams, scoring, and disputes all at once — often while playing in the session themselves. The existing organizer flow made these tasks hard to handle quickly, which slowed games down and disrupted the experience for players waiting on the court.

Research & Insights

Our research combined four methods: a competitive analysis of platforms already serving this space, stakeholder meetings with organizers, players, and partners, field research at the client's offices to observe real workflows firsthand, and structured usability testing of our own prototypes. A site visit surfaced the findings that shaped the rest of the project. The client confirmed that organizers are frequently players within their own sessions — managing scoring and logistics while also competing — a dual role the current app does not support well. Design Flow

The organizer's dual role became the center of our design work: one system needed to serve someone simultaneously running a session and playing in it. We framed the challenge as a single question: “How might we help a tournament organizer resolve scoring disputes clearly and fairly, so that games keep moving and every result is trusted?” Our answer was a single dispute-resolution system connecting the player who reports a score, the opponent who can flag it, and the organizer who resolves it — all working from the same recorded facts. We moved this system through three fidelity stages, from rough sketches to an interactive mid-fidelity prototype to a polished high-fidelity screen, testing and adjusting the flow at each stage.
